gearbox mainshaft refit

Obviously I don't have the old Triumph specialty tools, so I'm
wondering if there is a trick anyone has discovered to press the
mainshaft back into place into its bearing. Can it be safely pounded
back in, or do I need to take it someplace with a big floor press
or...
