Andy,
I put a Mallory Unilite distributor in my son's '74 TR6, and the car runs
great. I don't know why you'd want to go with a dual point unit when you
can go with electronic, but everyone has their preference. I also installed
a Mallory ballast, an Accel SuperStock sport coil, and Bosch platinum plugs
set at 0.035 gap. The car starts when cold with only 1 or 2 cranks and with
only a quick flick of the key once warmed up.
I sent the tach and speedo to Palo Alto Speedometer for refurb and to
convert the tach to electronic ignition. They did a nice job. We've been
driving the car since the conversion for 5 or 6 years without any problems.
It is nice not to have to carry spare rotors for the Lucas distributor!

Subject: Mallory distributors and electronic tachometers
Since I went to the triple Webers, I don't have any vacuum advance. The
mechanical advance isn't even working in my stock distributor. My local LBC
consultant has suggested the dual point Mallory system sold by Moss. He has
no direct experience with it, but would like to see me give it a try. Off
course, there's no drive to spin the tach cable in the Mallory unit, so Moss
has a note telling us an electronic tach is needed with this setup. I
emailed Palo Alto Speedometer to ask if my original Smith unit can be
changed on the inside to run as an electronic unit, but that was just today.
Anyone have any experience with the Mallory unit and/or an electronic
tachometer in their TR?
