Dashboard Reostat

The Reostat that controls the intensity of the dashboard lights:

 

My dashboard lights seem to be quite dim regardless of how much I dial up
the rheostat...The Reostat does work, it just does not seem to get too
bright regardless of how it is dialled.

 

Is it possible that the rheostat needs to be cleaned?  Anybody else have an
issue with this?
