Historic Races at BeaveRun
July 7-9, 2006
As part of the 24th annual Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix
Association's Festival of speed we would like to invite you to the
3rd annual Historic races at BeaveRun.
As you may already know Mike Connolly and I hatched this idea to
extend the scope of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix to include many
more types and years of cars and drivers than previously possible at
Schenley Park three years ago.
Last year the VRG came on board as the primary vintage racing
organization represented at BeaveRun. By all accounts it was a
smashing success!
While this is an open Historic race and most cars built between
1900 and 1972 are eligible to race here, including all years Jaguar
powered cars. The PVGPA will be availing ourselves of the VRG's
expertise in vetting both cars and drivers in groups 1,2,3,4 & 6. As
in past PVGPA events all final car technical and safety issues will
be more than aptly handled by Tivvy Shenton and his crew.
This is a great opportunity for you in many ways. First and
foremost is to participate in what has become one of the world's
premier vintage events, Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association's
Festival of Speed. By participating in the race your tax deductible
entry fee will go to two very worthwhile charities, The Autism
Society of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Valley School. All of the
proceeds from the weeklong Festival of Speed go to these
charities. As of October 2005 we have raised 1.9 million dollars.
That averages out to about $83,000.00 per year that we raise and
give, with your help, to these worthwhile charities.(unlike many
charities we have actually given them this amount of money. We are an
association of volunteers) At this venue we offer a lot for you entry
fee, near 2 hours of track time for the non-jaguar powered cars and
2.5 hours for the Jag powered cars. But in typical PVGPA & VRG
fashion there is much more. Car displays, Sponsor displays, kibitzing
in the paddock with old and new friends, track rides in actual
historic race cars driven by their drivers, and on Saturday evening
the annual VRG Hawaiian Luau. The best Luau east of the Big Island!
This is a great opportunity to meet the people of the PVGPA and VRG
and perhaps become a member of the VRG. A group dedicated to the safe
enjoyment of their vintage and historic cars, but a group that
realizes that the best of all worlds is not only having a great time
with your cars but also helping those who need it more than ourselves.
In many ways BeaveRun is one of the most interesting tracks I have
raced at. At first glance it appears to be an overly simplistic,
perhaps even boring layout. That notion is quickly dispelled. For an
experienced driver this course has many challenges. Dramatic
elevation changes, tight tricky corners, multiple curve combinations
and a back straight that is long enough for most of us to achieve
maximum speeds. The short front straight is just long enough to get
up a good head of steam but the dropping blind turns at the end of it
quickly teach you to pay attention.
For the novice this has to be one of the safest courses anywhere.
Lots of room for mistakes and in almost all instances the track is
wide enough that faster overtaking cars have plenty of places to pass
with out either of you getting upset.
As in all events that the VRG is involved in both on and off track
instruction and help is available for our novice drivers.
As you can see by our tentative, at present, race groups this track
lends itself to both horsepower and handling. Small nimble cars can
keep up quite well in many parts of the track to make up for the long
back straight and cubic inches.
