Al:
This sounds like you are unable to sustain the pressure needed
to keep the OD engaged. I suppose the solenoid could be going. The way
to check this is to pull over when it happens, stop the engine, and put
the key into the run position without starting the car. Put the tranny
in 4th gear, and flick the OD switch a few times and see if you can hear
it operating. If it is operating, then I would say it is not the
solenoid.
Next question - Do you have enough oil in your gearbox?
Next question - Have you tried removing the sump and cleaning
the filters (there are two in there as I recall, and the second one is
behind something so it is not visible. I am doing this from memory, so
forgive the vagueness - when you get to be old like me, memory is the
second thing to go. I forget what the first thing to go is... =:-)
Ahem. So I *think* that you remove a piston, and there is
another filter. I think. Anyway, clean the filters and see if that
helps. Clogged filters will lower the available pressure to the clutch.
If there is enough oil, and the filters are clean, and the
solenoid is working, then I might consider asking what kind of oil do
you use in your gearbox. Some people are using 30wt motor oil, and this
will thin as it gets hot (it is not a multi-vis oil so it's viscosity
changes dramatically with temp). If it gets too thin, it might not be
able to give the needed pressure, especially if your pump is worn. You
might try 80 or 90wt gear oil if this is the case.
If none of that works, your OD clutch may be worn out. That is
gnarly, so let's hope it doesn't come to that....

J overdrive question.
My overdrive has been kicking off after about an hour or so of driving.
If i stop for about 10 minutes it will come back on.
Its very annoying at 85 mph when it kicks out .especially on the 12 hour
trip
to TRF's summer party.
I checked all the wire connections and they seem tight.
It seems to me that the solenoid may be starting to fail.
Has anyone experienced a similar symptoms?
