Mike and Alan---I do't know where the advantage is in using U-joints
w/o the Zirk fittings. Since we have to take them apart to install them,
it's easy enough to fill the cups half-full at this time, like the
pre-packed ones.
I will say that most of my original no-fitting u-joints lasted a looong
time. (I took out the last original one after 300,000 miles, while I was
replacing a rear hub) I sort of doubt that this was because it didn't
have a fitting in it, but rather that the original qualty of the
bearings were very good...and this particular one didn't have to flex
much. Some of my Zirk-fitted u-joints have been in the car for over
150,000 miles. I give them a limited short stroke with a grease gun
about every five years.
As some of you already know, it can be difficult to get the gun on, on
even the extended fittings. It's easier if you just unscrew them to
where there's only a couple of threads holding them in, give them a
shot, and screw them back in. I also understand there are special gun
connections to get into tight places. Berry?

I don't think Spicer makes a U-Joint that I know of for the TR6..... at
least not one of their "lifetime" u joints. I just went through this
when I was seeking the lifetime u-joints from spicer. These are the
u-joints that are pre-greased and totally sealed..... no zirk fitting.
I thought I found some spicer u-joints,but when I got them I found they
were "Hardy/Spicer. The u-joint was in fact made by GKN. These are
decent quality u-joints, but they do have the zirk fitting and they are
not the genuine "spicer" brand that Al is refering to.
I didn't want the Zirk fitting because it gets in the way when you try
and fit the bolts when replacing the half shafts and drive shaft. I am
going to install the u-joints without the fitting on, and then screwed
on the zirks, greased the u-joints, removed the fittings and then put
the fitting back on.

Let me know if you find something different.
