John,

Rather than trying to lock the flywheel by using a bar against the ring gear
teeth, what I've done in the past is to screw a couple of 1-1/2 inch bolts
into 2 of the clutch plate mounting holes, opposite sides,  and then use a
length of bar between those two bolts to hold against the torque.  You can
also use this method to accurately re-tighten the flywheel bolts.  If you're
working from under the car, you can usually wedge the bar against the garage
floor or car frame so that it becomes a one-man (or gal)  operation.
