What color is the DOT 5.1? I think it's clear. Yep - found a couple of web
references for it.

I think that the 5.1 stuff is based on the boron-esther (I think this is
the compound) and does not use silicone... so it's clear and I'm fairly
sure it is compatible with DOT 3/4 (because those are boron-esther).

Then again I could be totally wrong and you could suffer catastrophic
brake failure if you follow my suggestion.

Seriously, if the previous owner said "synthetic" and the fluid is clear,
I should think that we're talking DOT 5.1 here.

the regular DOT5 silicone stuff is def. purple.

Last point - check with the previous owner. If they blow you off, just
flush the system and refill with DOT 4 or DOT 5.1.
