filter question

I have a spin on oil filter adapter on my motor. It's installed so that the 
part that the filter threads onto points straight down. There were no problems 
when I removed the old Fram filter. However, the new Unipart filter has a 
clearance issue with the edge of the oil pan and makes it unable to line up 
squarely with the threads on the adapter.
 
My question is do I have the adapter oriented incorrectly, or is the Unipart 
filter the problem?
