Marty---I vaguely recall running into the same situation many years ago
when installing the Mallory into an in-line Corvette motor. I think what
you need to do is reposition the distributor drive gear. This is the one
driven by the camshaft gear. Take off the distributor pedestal, lift and
turn it so it drops back into mesh either a tooth forward, or a tooth
back from where you started. This will put the rotor in a spot so the
points will be closed, as before. Then it's just a matter of rotating
your distributor so the points open when the rotor is at #1 plug cap
terminal again.
When we go to performance parts, the TR repair manuals don't tell us
much. Expect that the (Bentley) illustration for positioning the milled
slot to be different for the Mallory. i.e. Instead of being "twenty to
two" as illustrated, the slot may have to be turned to be 27 minutes to
two. This may only be clear when going thru this exercise. Do all of
this with the timing pointer on 0-TDC,so you don't lose your place!
IF you are using the same gear from the Lucas distributor and pinning it
to the bottom of the Mallory shaft, then where you drill the hole for
this pin should give you an alternative method
of getting the points and rotor in sync.

Well my Mallory dual point distributor finally arrived today after being
back ordered since February from more than one source. So I go to put
that sucker in tonight and it has me totally confused. If I look at my
stock distributor when the rotor is pointing directly at the number one
cap terminal the points are closed and are in the center of the flat
dwell area of the distributor cam. When I take my new distributor and
place the rotor pointing directly at the number one cap terminal the
points are fully open and on the lobe of the distributor cam. TOTALLY
OPOSITE. I have looked at this for the last hour thinking that I am
missing something and looking at it backwards but NO THATS REALY THE WAY
IT IS. There is no adjustment. So, can somebody that knows more about
this sort of thing than me explain what the heck is going on here?
Help me, I want to go autoxing Monday:-)
