Bob,
I agree wholeheartedly. When I first started in the late 70s every resource
I contacted, from the club level all the up to the Triumph competition
people at British Leyland's headquarters in Leonia, NJ, were more than happy
to share thier knowledge and offer advice. The absence of 'elitist'
attitudes was a relief for a newbie at the time and encouraged me to tackle
jobs I might otherwise have avoided for lack of information. At some point
one can get so discouraged as to simply rid oneself of the source of
frustration, the car.
I believe the free access of knowledge and assistance is very important with
Triumph ownership as many new owners consider the resource a major reason
why they decide to get involved. This list has revealed that sentiment
many times. To restrict that access is to say, "We own it and will decide
who gets it."
VTR may have good intentions, looking out for it's membership and financial
stability. But the impression it gives the new TR owners is not favorable
and, at least in my opinion, hurts it's image.
Possibly VTR can allow access for non-members for a period of time which
would encourage new owners to join? There should be an acceptable
compromise somewhere between the two sides.
