Thanks for the advice.  I got the gear off OK using the gear puller as  
suggested.  It's the new gear that seems to be an extremely tight fit going  
on.  
Again, the old key seems wedged in and won't  move.   Sounds like I'm left with 
tapping the gear on making  sure to line up the key with the slot in the gear 
accordingly, I guess.
