Phil, You really should be able to remove the filter with your hand or good grippy glove. When installing the new filter you should apply a coating of oil on the rubber gasket, turn the filter until it makes contact with the housing & then tighten one half to three quarters of a turn to seat. There's no need to over tighten the filter.
