        Robert:

The numbers cited are transmission numbers, not commission
numbers.
The gearbox numbers are in fact unrelated to the commission number. To
get the gearbox
number you will need to remove the transmission tunnel cover, and look
on top of the starter motor
"bulge" on the bell housing. The number is stamped there. (Anybody
remember differently?)
I am citing this from memory, so if I get the details wrong, I
will plead Alzheimer's.
I *think* the gearbox numbers all started with CC, CD, or CF.
Perversely, the CC gearboxes were
the later ones in the series.
Trying to decide from the switch locations can help, but since
the top covers can be
swapped, it is no guarantee. You are correct, the neutral/seatbelt
switch is from the later
transmissions. Dust off your Moss catalog. There is a nice little
section in there that
details the transmission numbering scheme.

Subject: Which gearbox do I have?

Greetings,

I'm trying to determine if in fact I have a later model gearbox in my
'68
TR250. It has the reverse switch on the side (towards the rear) rather
than
on top of the cover. It also has the Neutral/Seatbelt switch, which I
believe
came well after 1968. I'm in the process of replacing a broken clutch
fork
pin, replacing leaky seals, and considering going through the rest of
the box
to check/replace bad bearings, synchro cups, etc.

I'm asking because I see differences in some of the parts on TRF that
breakdown as "TR250 and TR6 up to CD20281" vs. "TR6 after CD20281".

Now I know the CD numbers are the vehicle number, is there a way to
determine
from any of the numbers stamped on the gearbox what year it might be or
more
correctly what CD## range it would belong to?

Oh, and to be clear this is a non-overdrive gearbox.

Any help is much appreciated.
