Carb cleaner - outside

Gradually, I've been cleaning up my engine here and there.  Now I'm looking at 
the exterior of the carbs and they are pretty dirty.  It didn't seem like it 
would be too smart to coat them up with a bunch of Gunk and then hose them off. 
 What's the best thing for cleaning these up?  Thanks for any suggestions.
