Rick,
So "The manual recommendation to use 90W is fiction" is it?
Interestingly, no one told the writers of the "Triumph TR6 Handbook"
which came in the glove box my 1975 TR6, Publication Part No. 848111/75.
It states on page 66 in the "Lubrication Specification" section that for
the "Gearbox Overdrive and Final Drive" the "S.A.E. Viscosity
Specification" is "SAE 90 Hypoid" for operation in temperatures +30* F
and SAE 80 in temps below 30* F.

John can require any lubricant he chooses to warrant his transmissions,
since he'll be footing the bill if a failure occurs. But when the
factory chose a lubricant to recommend when they warranted the
transmissions and overdrives (at least in 1975), they required SAE
80/90.
Dick Taylor recently attempted to attach a "bulletin regarding overdrive
oil, courtesy of Herman van den Akker" that may supercede the Factory
Handbook recommendation, but I recall that
when the local dealer, World Cars in Columbus, GA replaced the layshaft
needle bearings in my 74.5 TR6 under warranty in 1976 they used Castrol
90 wt., and that the Service Manager strongly recommended I use no other
lubricant.

Maybe I am, and all these folks were misguided, but I have driven
hundreds of thousands of miles on "J" type overdrives with Castrol 90w
in the units with no overdrive problems or failures and close to 6
figures on Redline MTL with no overdrive mechanical problems. I'm
beginning to wonder if it makes much difference what lubricant one uses
in the units as evidence of long-term problem-free operation can be
found in a wide variety of oils. But the engineers at Triumph / British
Leyland / Jaguar Rover Triumph recommended 80/90 wt. back in the day and
it is a reality.

May your gears mesh quietly,

Stuart--John Esposito (Quantum Mechanics - O/D rebuilder) required I use
non-detergent 30-weight motor oil in my 'A' O/D he rebuilt. 17,000
miles later and no problems. The manual recommendation to use 90W is
fiction, as is several other errors in the Bentley pub.

Good luck.
