Here's my $.02.
I repaired my rusty batt box repaired with fiberglass. Upon finding rust
perforating the box, I trimmed out the rusty "swiss cheese", applied Naval
Jelly to stabilize the rust, rinsed it off, let it dry and painted it with
Eastwood Rust primer. Next I applied fiberglass cloth and resin of sufficient
thickness to span the holes. I sanded the fiberglass and topcoated with body
filler to smooth the surfact, sanded and primed it and painted it the desired
body color. The fix is very sturdy and should last as long as I need it to
last. No, it's not original or a particularly pretty, but what's the difference
when it's covered up by the battery tray? Since my car isn't a trailer queen I
will likely leave the repair as is.
IMHO I would opt for doing the fiberglass repair until a new part is available,
if that is what you want. Unless a person is building a show car the fiberglass
repair is a very affordable option. I believe other listers have done this with
floor panels, too.
