One other thing to look for (besides the obvious voltage regulator) is a
short within the guage itself.
The fuel and temp both are pretty tight internally. One of mine (forget
which one) got a little off kilter and the back side of the gauge
shorted to the frame of the gauge.
The hard part of figuring this out is that they work on the bench (out
of the car) but when you put them in, the case shorts to ground. This
had me scratching my head for days.
