Thanks All. I managed to get away by turning the fan.

I block the wheels, take it out of gear, take out the spark plugs, and fit a
socket to the alternator pulley nut. With a nice big socket wrench to turn
the alternator pulley I push down on the fan belt just enough to turn the
crank as I turn the pulley. Makes it easy to turn it back AND forth to find
that "middle spot". Plus I've only ruined two alternator bearings and a fan
belt using this method ;)

Sya I wanted to set my valve clearances. Is there a clever non-invasive
way
to move the crankshaft?
