bouncing speedo

Hi Gang: At speeds below about 10 mph, my speedo needle bounces like hell
between zero and about 40 mph. It hits the stop pin so hard, it's bent. Once
the car's moving above 10 mph, the thing's fine. Any ideas? I have a J-type
with an angle drive. Thanks. colinthom@shaw.ca
