Thank you Dan for your always excellent explanation of all things
electrical. I was aware of the dead battery scenario with a high output
alternator, but it is good to remind me and others of that potential
concern. I did not mention that there were two reasons for me to go with
the Bosch: First, I have an electric radiator fan that draws about 12 amps
and I found the stock Lucas alternator didn't provide enough current at
times (would cause the fan relay to cut out repeatedly at idle). Perhaps
that was compounded by 34-year old corroded connections too. The other
reason was cost--the remanufactured Bosch was about $65 to my door, vs.
rebuilding the Lucas for twice that amount.
Separately Dan, I have a new Mazda that apparently has a generator instead
of an alternator; can you explain why generators would be making a comeback
(I always thought they were ancient technology).
