Mike--Before you removed the timing set, did you mark the distributor drive
gear tooth that engaged the cam gear at TDC on either #1 or #6 cylinders?
When I R&R'd my cam (Isky Z-19) this winter, I found that the crank sprocket
and cam chainwheel timing marks lined up only when #6 cylinder was TDC on
the firing stroke. I was expecting to find this condition with #1 at TDC
firing! Nor could I bank on the Bentley slot alignment approach. Anyhow, I
doubt you messed up on the cam R&R, it's just the dist. drive gear that is
off.
Suggest you pull the valve cover and dizzy cap and check TDC with a dial
indicator on the #1 (or, in my case, #6) rockers. If off there, pull the
dist. drive gear and move 1 tooth in the needed direction. Put it back
together and fire up. If things are better, you know you're in the right
direction.
An excellent timing procedure is on the Isky cams website (thanks G. Dito).
