Adam---If you can move the lever shocks "by hand" when they are off the
car, they are either worn out or out of oil. Even when clamped in a
vise, they should be difficult to lever.
Koni was my shock of preference 20 years ago. I adjusted them once
(stiffer) about a year after installing them. They've been on the front
of car for about 200,000 miles now. Still work good. They're not cheap,
but last virtually forever. Whether it is worth the difference would
depend on how long you think you'll keep the TR.
You can also have these shocks converted, so they can be adjusted while
on the car. Also an expensive proposition (to the "Yellow") according to
one of their reps. Unless you race, or slalom the car so often as to be
changing the shock setting a lot, I doubt it's worth the added expense
for this upgrade.
Lever shocks work well with stock springs. I admit to converting to the
(KYB) tubes in the rear about a year ago. They give more control in
rebound. This one was the VB kit, at about $175. and easy to install.
Know that most of this upgrade stuff should be done as a package to get
the full benefit. That would include performance type tires, anti- roll
bars, springs, shocks. & suspension bushings.
