Hey Bob,
This sounds very familiar. My 76 had a feul pump that failed last year in
much the same way you describe. I could keep it running if I kept the idle up
but if I sat at a traffic light even, it would be enough to empty my fuel
filter and float bowls and die. I got a rebuild kit from a local Triumph
mechanic and replaced the two one-way valves and the diaphragm and no problem
since. It is pretty straight forward but getting the old valves out is a bit
tricky. There should be a lever at the bottom of your pump that manually
operates the pump. You should feel some resistance and see the filter fill
with just a few sqeezes. If not then you could clamp or block the fuel line
from the tank and remove the top of the pump without removing it from the
block, you'll find a screen there that might be plugged. If you don't clamp
or block the fuel line from the tank then gravity will rear it's ugly head and
you'll get soaked . . . I did.
Good luck.
