Good point, I forgot one detail - I use two jam nuts INSTEAD OF the
regular nut (rather than using the regular nut and a jam nut). If I
remember right, two jam nuts are actually a little thinner than the
standard nut. Either way, both nuts fit onto the exposed thread with
no problem.
And actually there was no adhesive on the head gasket (I had installed
it myself a few years prior). It was just really stubborn.
