Mike---Most anti-roll bar bushings are made in one piece (except metal
ones) but are very difficult to fit over the "eyes" at the ends of the
bar arms. Some of us just cut these bushings at an angle so they'll slip
over the bar, as there is no penalty for doing so. Once they're encased
in their shells, they can't go anywhere. The U-bolts need only be
tightened enough to ensure the bar doesn't give up the transfer of
torque from one side to the other.
When rubber bushings age and get harder, they sort of behave like the
more modern poly bushings, which isn't such a bad thing. I wouldn't be
too concerned about a little "cracking around the edges"
on that alone.
