Curt,
I don't read in the Bentley manual that one must remove the rear cover.
The removal and refit description is operation 51.25.25 on page 349.
Anyway, you don't need to remove the rear cover to replace the
mountings. Depending on what kind of exhaust system you have, you will
most likely have to remove the rear exhaust pipes. Then it's just remove
the four bolts from the axle flanges on either side and support the
diff. while removing the four nuts from each mount and lower the diff. I
use a floor jack and it's a bit of a balancing act to keep the diff. on
the jack while lowering and raising.
Be careful removing the mounting bolt nuts. They are most likely very
rusty and I recommend using plenty of penetrating oil to loosen them up.
Otherwise it is all too easy to twist the mounting bolts off and then
you have a big problem. Ask me how I know! You might also use this time
to check that the brackets where the bolts pass through are crack free
and box them in using the kit from TRF or have them made up locally.

Good luck,

Still trying to get rid of a clunk so thought I would change the rear
end rubber mounts. In reading the Bentley manual it says you have to
pull the rear casing cover off to change the mounts. I have crawl under
there to see for myself but thought I would also check with the list. It
seems like I could just drop the whole thing a little and get the mounts
in but maybe not. Anyone do this without breaking open the rear end. I
didn't order that gasket when I ordered the mounts : (
