What the heck was I thinking ?!  You're talking ball joint and I'm
responding about tie-rods.

Well, the process is the same but of course somewhat more complicated in
that you need to remove the vertical link.  That is unless you can swivel
the vertical link down and turn it and then get a hard surface under the top
of the vertical link.  Removing the small steering stop on top of the
trunnion (just above and between the lower a-arms) will get the vertical
link to turn so the axle is pointed forward.  It is also a tapered hole so
the impact will squeeze the hole and pop out the ball joint just as it will
for the tie-rod scenario.
