If memory serves me the early TR6 "eye-ball" vents were metal and the later

Your memory playing tricks on you Dave? Mine too - and these days, too
frequently for comfort <smile>
However, in this case, the eyeball vents were always plastic. The ones used on
the TR6 were identical to those used on all other Triumph saloons where
eyeball vents were part of the equipment - i.e. all models large and small
introduced after Herald and Spitfire AND pre-dating the 6 such as 1300 and
1500 front wheel drives. For the record, ISTR the earlier version of vent on
the TR4/A while not being the eyeball type, also had plastic louvres.
Reason? Once the tooling for the injection moulding was finished, the cost
could be amortised across the whole model spectrum and the quality was
reasonably predictably consistent. This was an important consideration for
Standard-Triumph where REDucing component cost was always a primary
consideration and IMproving product quality a distant secondary.
