Hi list,
I was worried about being caught in an all-electric rural house in WV during
hurricane Isabel so I decided to make a run for PA via Baltimore. I had
gassed up the '69 the night before (I never fill it because I'm still
paranoid after having a bad sending unit gasket 20 years ago) and gave it a
field inspection (pullling the wheels and taking a good look under, in and
around). I loaded the 6 in ominous clouds and then sped off eastward.
"Sped" being a key word in the phrase. Traffic was calm but moving very
fast. I wound up driving almost 3 hours at an AVERAGE of 80 MPH (72 to 88
mph almost all of the way) with no other issue than what appeared to be very
high fuel comsumption. I'll calculate the fuel consumed and get back to the
list.
My engine is 20 over, has a performance cam (what exact level I am not sure
of right now) and has the '69 "unadjustable" needles raised 1mm higher than
recommended in the air valves. The car runs stellarly at all rpms and
loads. I'll likely lower the needles and see how the car runs, as I figure
there's no need to pollute unnecessarily.
What kind of gas mileage is everyone else getting for city and for highway
driving (and indicate speed generally traveled). I seemed to use FAR less
gas at 70 MPH cruising speed when I drove from PA to D.C. Oh, and I'm
driving on a standard 4 speed transmission (id est- no overdrive).
Sincerely,
Dave Herbert
