Curt---The lifting of the air valve to test for mixture can be
deceiving, if you lift too far. Just go 1/16". If the engine doesn't
falter you may be OK.
If your carbs have the adjustable needles, they won't also have the
adjustable jets, unless you have mixed-and-matched carburetor parts.
The trim adjustment screws should be turned in all the way home.
As a further test, if you can't get more fuel, try less air. Take off
the air filter housing and hold a shop towel (or some porous rag) over
each air inlet in turn, then both at the same time. If the engine speeds
up, then indeed the mix is a little lean. This could indicate that
unmetered air is getting into the engine. Check all places that this
could happen. (Open carb [vacuum] ports underneath, incomplete manifold
gasket sealing, etc.)
I can't recommend that you go to a richer needle, unless you have
modified the engine in other fuel-demanding ways. The stock B1AF should
do the job.
