Basically, popularity. 'Pastel' colours as against dark blue / green / black
and (arguably) drab greys were far more popular in the UK after WW2. It had
a lot to do with the sombreness of war, the 'blackout,' bombed-out buildings
and the gloom associated with the conflict. People were desperate for colour
in any guise. I well recall Vauxhall PA Crestas (General Motors) offering
sugar pink and white duotones with coral interior trim and acres of garish
chrome!!!!! Perhaps a more extreme example - but proves my point? Black was
mainly reserved for 'official' cars like the police and government and while
the demand was still there for black, it wasn't that popular - but continued
to be available for those who wanted it. The other issue was that black
(like dark blue) showed the dirt immediately and people no longer wanted to
wash and polish their cars daily.
