Dave,
Thanks for the feedback. The assurance is always appreciated. I assumed that
this was a reasonable first approach to try to save the horn. I hate throwing
anything away that may still have a useful life.
Now, if I could ask you (or other 6pack members) for some additional
information about the horn.
I've followed the ground wire through the firewall to the base of the steering
column where it had been disconnected.
I was amazed at all the disconnected wires under my dash the first time I
looked. No wonder Lucas has been referred to as the Prince of Darkness.
What's more amazing is that all my gauges, lights and signals (except
speedometer) seem to work. Someone did jury rig the hazard switch, but other
than that things seem to be working fine.
Anyway, regarding the horn. When I ground the wire coming through the firewall
to the frame it activates the horn. That's the good news. However when I
connect this wire to the wire coming out of the base of the steering column, I
get nothing when I press the horn button. When I pulled off the horn button I
see a plastic sleeve housing two metal pins that are separated with a spring.
This little structure looks like it rests on a stationary piece of metal in the
steering column. I don't see where any wire coming up through the steering
column is connecting. On the back of the horn button I see the metal plate
that aligns with the upper pin in the plastic sleeve. What I don't understand
is how pressing the horn button completes the connection. What does the wire
in the steering column attach to? It seems like it should be attached to one
of the pins in the plastic sleeve so when you press the horn button it somehow
grounds everything to the metal base in the steering column.
Electricity is not my strong suit so any help is appreciated.
