Terry:
You will need to drill and tap the rear mounting flange that
is cast on the OD unit and replace the output flange
with the one from your TR6 transmission.
In addition, you will need all the various bits and pieces
to attach the OD unit; OD transmission mainshaft (available from TRF),
adapter (available from www.quantumechanics), speedometer angle drive,
OD switch, plinth, etc. You will also need to drill and
tap your transmission top cover for an OD lockout switch.
Expect to spend about $250 getting all the needed bits and
pieces to do the conversion in addition to the OD itself. You may
well wish to overhaul your transmission while you are at it, since
you will need to disassemble your tranny to install the OD mainshaft.
The J-type overdrive unit is fully compatible, except for
the unmachined mounting flange, as mentioned above.
Cheers,
Vance

Subject: Volvo J Type - will it work?
Wise listers,
I've found an '83 Volvo 240 wagon (parts car) with o/d. This car uses the J
type overdrive unit, and appears externally to be the same unit as the TR6.
Has anyone "been there done that" and can confirm this unit can be used in a
TR6 application? I'm concerned there may be some differences of which I'm
unaware (different input/output shaft splines, etc.) that could cause
problems. I have an excellent gearbox and I wouldn't mind installing a new
mainshaft and used adapter to convert to overdrive.
Anyone have a used adapter plate for a J type they don't need? This part
does not appear to be available new.
I realize the later Volvos (85 and up I think) that used the J type would
not have the connection for the speedo cable as the later Volvos used an
electronic speedometer.
