Hey Curt,
U-joints are definitely an issue with clunks & strange driveline noises.
One of the first things I did was to replace all the joints with Spicer
brand parts. The common u-joints will do fine for stock motors but I'd
still go with a quality brand because who the hell wants to do this again.
The rear joints are easier to do in my opinion with the axle removed. If
you remove the wheel , drum & shoes on the side of the bad u-joint there
will be six bolts that can be seen as you rotate the axle ( two at a
time ). Remove these bolts & the assembly should pull out through the
center. Now you can make the repair with out breaking your back or have
crud drop in your face. While the hub assembly is out I recommend
inspecting the spline for excessive wear , regrease the spline &
reinstall. I would also recommend getting a Bentley manual, this makes
most repairs easier.
If you need more info just holler.
