R. Ashford,
Based on a review of the 1970 TR6 wiring diagram posted at the British V8
site (thank you Dan Masters!) I have the following questions/comments:
1. When your license plate lamps quite working, did your rear side marker
lamps quite working, too? They and the tail lamps are all fed by the same
wire.
2. When you press the brake pedal, do the tail ("running") lights or rear
marker lights come on, too?
3. The wiring diagram shows the original wires to the brake lights to be
green/purple stripe. Are those still connected to the brake lights? What
do the red wires in the brake area connect to? It sounds as if someone
rewired the rear lights and/or connected auxiliary wires, maybe for a little
trailer.
4. The wiring diagram does not label the brake lights as to whether either
is left or right. However, if the positions follow the conventions of the
rest of the lamp positions on the wiring diagram, the left brake lamp will
originally have had two positive connections. One is from the voltage
source, the other wire runs over to the right brake lamp, which therefore
needs only one connection. The original lamp housings with two tabs were,
of course, sufficient and superceding ones with three tabs won't hurt
anything at all.
The wiring diagram is at:

Maybe looking at that will help you in finding the problem.
