Don,
Years ago Castrol (and most other gear oils) were GL4 (similar to the way
most oils in the 70's were "SE" grade). At some point, Castrol changed the
formulation to GL5.
Hope this helps,
Hugh Barber

Subject: Castrol Hypoy C Gear Oil -- GL5?
I was unaware of the GL4 vs GL5 issues and may have been using GL5 in my
TR250 transmission and differential.
I used Castrol Hypoy C Gear Oil 80W/90. I assume this is GL5 because the
label says:
"Castrol Hypoy C Gear Oil is a multi-grade gear lubricant providing
excellent performance in hypoid gears requiring a GL-5 lubricant"
" Meets the performance requirements of MIL-L/2105C, Ford ESW-M2C-105B
and Mack GO-G"
I also used whatever gear oil was at the service stations back in the
70's. When did GL5 come along?
Thanks,
