All,
My '74 had a similiar situation. I dismantled the guages and carefully
rubbed the chrome part of the bezel with super-fine '0000' steel wool (get
the grade with as many 0s as possible) It polishes the chrome and gets the
rust out of the pits. Not show quality but I'm rebuilding a driver.
Careful touch-up with the wife's mascara (don't tell) on the flat-black
inner part. Went back and carefully used metal polish on the chrome part -
now they look great against the dark teak dash.
I used some screen window spline I had around (use the smallest size) to
go between the dash and guage when I put them back in. I think they sit a
little further out than they were, but no worries.
BTW, all my guages had an oily sort of 'fog' on the back of the glass -
looked great after a careful cleanup. Don't know what it was but the car
had been sitting for a long time. Cheers.
