Thanks to all who responded. I am going to take you up on your
fiberglass/temporary solution. I plan on getting the whole car painted
down the road, and at least I will know one thing that needs attention
and won't be surprised.
It's just a PITA to be poking around the floorboards, actually vacuuming
to reinstall the carpet, and to find this hole.

I don't know how large the hole is but a temporary fix until it is
replaced is to use fiberglass repair kits found at auto parts stores.
It doesn't need to pretty if you replace the floorboard. I've used the
kits myself. They usually include fiberglass mesh material and bonding
and hardening agents. I had this stuff on one of my cars during
college and it was still there several years later when I sold the car
to a friend. He had it for another 3-4 years and the fiberglass was
still there, filling up a hole in the trunk area.
