In the past 2 weeks I've had the transmission in CF37325U out 4, yes
count 'em, 4 times . Spent more time under my car on my back than a
cheap whore.
I couldn't seem to get the new front cover to seal properly. I'd just
use the old cover but it cracked getting the oil seal out and is a whole
different ugly story. Usually, I fill the transmission with oil after
rebuilding and leave it tipped to the front and rear for a day each to
insure there are no leaks prior to installation, because I don't enjoy
the process.
Did the same three times, no leaks so I installed it. When I run the car
for more then 20 minutes or so, oil comes dripping from the hole at the
bottom of the bellhousing. Last time I used sandpaper on a flat surface
to make sure there were no burs or uneven surface on the mating end.
Sure enough, it wasn't machined flat so I used some blue sealant with a
good bead and thought that would do it. Leaked again. So I spent about a
half hour and 3 sheets of sandpaper last night getting the surface as
level as possible, installed the cover with a new gasket and another
good bead of sealant. This morning I set the transmission on the bench
tilting down in the front and attached my drill to the input shaft with
a piece of hose and a drill bit (a tip I learned on this list) and ran
it for 5 minutes..no leaks! I'll run it again for another 5 minutes
later to be as sure as I can it's leakless prior to the 4th
installation.
Problem is I'm running out of friends, neighbors and spouses to assist
me. A little embarrassing to hear "didn't we just do that last..."
