Pete---I'll take a stab at two of the items you reported giving you
fits, when trying to tune your TR.

While the engine should still idle well whether the timing is set at 4
deg. ATDC or 10 deg. BTDC, if you do the later, do it with the vacuum
retard disconnected and plugged. 

Your carbs may not be responding to mixture adjustment because the screw
that changes the height of the needle is out of the threaded receiver.
(This can happen if turned towards "lean" too far) To get them
reconnected, push up on the needle base, while at the same time turn the
adjustment screw clockwise. When this connection is made, the needle
should then respond to the screw turning.  

As Hugh noted..., these carb air valves need only be raised 1/16" to
test for the proper mix. Raising them more than this can make all but
the richest settings faulter.
