Based on my dismantling reassembling my practice pair of Stromberg carbs and
successfully rebuilding the ones in my car, here's what I know. If I'm
mistaken, I'm sure some of the pros on the list will speak up.

The metering needle, which dips in and out of the jet (the calibrated
opening in the fuel bowl, is attached to the bottom of the piston/plunger
that rises and falls to maintain an area of low pressure, i.e., constant
depression (CD Type Carbs). The metering needle has a very small o-ring
which, if worn, will allow dash pot oil to leak past it and get sucked in to
the intake along with the fuel and air mixture.

That's all I know. I hope it helps.
