Awsome work. All I did tonight was sound my rebuilt horn off a 12V cordless
drill battery after Wake Forest beat Duke in double overtime. Almost as
satisfying as what you did.

Fixed ! Between rain I followed Dick's advice on checking the
wiring at the switch; all was okay.
So, it had to be the plastic switch arrangement on the motor.
Loosen the knurl nut; removed the 7/16's and rotated it slightly.
Took the switch off the motor and gently pulled all the connectors
off until I had the switch in my hand. Talk about crud Trev.. It
was full of rust, paint, dirt, oil, and ??? Put down rags and
sprayed the connectors with brake cleaner; that got 'em looking
better... Put a small (.010) file into each socket and cleaned those
too.

Took the switch into the workbench and gently pried it apart. See
above for crud-like contents! Sprayed it with cleaner, carefully
removed - one at a time - the copper lugs, and so forth from inside
and dremelled them clean. Put it back together, back onto the
motor... Quick test before I bolted it all down, and it worked!
Wipers now not only work better, they also self park!

Okay, so it wasn't the ring gear, nor the clutch, not even the carb
rebuild... But I fixed something on it today!!!

Subject: Wipers - Self Parking Failed

: Hi All,
: Have a 73 (CF7000U0), with a few small issues (needs ring gear,
clutch), but
: my primary issue at the moment is the self-park of the wipers
suddenly stopped
: working. Haven't fiddled with anything yet... Also, Have an 87
XJ6, again
: with the same self-park problem, but the 90% usual cause of this
is a failure
: in the column switch.
:
: The wire-harness connector to the wiper motor in the '6 is pretty
tatty, the
: wiper column switch is 'a little loose'. Given that rain has
returned to the
: San Francisco area, I'd like to fix this problem I had thought
about pulling
: the motor, clean/replace/rebuild the connector as needed, and also
pull the
: column switch for a clean and repair. . Is there a common point
of failure
: with self-park in the '6's, and is it easy/a bear to fix? Or
should I just do
: my planned work and hope for the best?
:
:
: Thanks
