Door repairs

Gang - I'm replacing a bunch of door stuff this winter.  Seals, fuzzies,
glass, winders, door panels, etc.  I'm curious - What is the purpose of the
rod that runs horizontally between the fore and aft window channels inside the
door?  It belongs, I know, but I can't see what it does.
