A few years ago I faced a similar situation in that I wanted to replace the
original fuel lines (solid black in my case) but didn't want the worm type
clamps (ugly) or the original spring type clamps (unreliable). So I made up
some solid metal lines and used compression fittings to connect them. The
compression fittings aren't exactly F1 technology or anything, but they are
an improvement over stock (IMO). The fittings were bought from a local
hardware store and the lines from an automotive store (I cut and bent the
lines myself). Some (crude) pictures are at
<http://www.gumbi.com/peterz/tr6/carbs/fuel_lines.html>.
Note that the stock connections at the fuel pump are compression fittings so
I felt that I wasn't compromising safety by continuing the process "up the
line".
