Hello.
I am definitely out of answer mode and back in question mode
After removing my differential yesterday, tonight I went out and took a look
at the prop shaft and u-joints. You may recall that along with the whine
noise I was getting a sort of jingle sound. Before removing the
differential, I gave the prop shaft a few jerks back and forth. I heard a
sort of plink-plink sound which was of about the same tone as the jingle I
heard while driving. Now with the diff off, I tried to reproduce this sound.
Nothing like that from the diff, but if the yokes on the rear u-joint bang
together I get the same sound. Although it looks old, there is no play at
all in the u-joint.
Question #1: Is it possible that this jingling was coming from the u-joint?
I decided it may make sense to replace the prop shaft u-joints while I have
gone this far. I made an attempt to disconnect the prop-shaft from the
gearbox. Very difficult to reach around the exhaust.
Question #2: Is it possible to disconnect the prop shaft from the gear box
with the exhaust in place and without removing the interior? Any tips on
how?
I talked to a local British auto shop and was referred to a shop that
specializes in differentials. He suggested that a rebuild was not much more
expensive than a used unit. Called up the shop and was told there was no
problem other than parts.
Question #3:
If I decide to go this route, is there a rebuild kit I should buy?
I'm guessing that if I go with a rebuild, replacing the ring and pinion are
the most expensive parts.
Question #4:
How can I assess the condition of the ring and pinion myself?
Thanks for any and all advice.
