re the hub bearings, which came up a few weeks ago, procedure seems to be
to:
a) tighten them past the specified torque to snug up everything (without
being a gorilla about it),
b) back off the nut JUST until the wheel will spin freely,
c) spin the wheel a few times to make sure the bearings have settled in.
d) if everything seems in order, then back off the nut (if necessary) just
enough to allow insertion of the locking cotter pin.
I'd suggest then going for a spin around the block and rechecking before you
put the dust cover back on. wheel should spin freely without any feeling of
"looseness" if you try to pull/push in and out.
re calipers, I believe they should center themselves ... and if they don't,
it suggests that the piston is sticking on one side.

Subject: Hub Bearing Adjustment and caliper spacing?
I am getting ready to adjust the bearing preload on the front disc brake
rotor and I seem to remember reading somewhere that these were a little
different to adjust do to the felt oil seal in the hub. Since it creates a
false feel of tightness of the bearings. Actually the castle nut seems to
tighten before the bearings start to drag. In the Bentley manual it suggest
tightening the castle nut to 5 ft/lbs. What's the correct way to adjust?
Also on the brake calipers, is it necessary to center the caliper to the
rotor with shims, since they are disc brakes they will center themselves,
won't they?
Thanks for your responses in advance!
