John,
I myself am just getting my feet wet in the Triumph world. But I come from
the Cougar world, and some things - like what I'm about to say are
universal.
Ditch the Chiltons. They are crap, vague and general, as your example
illustrates.
In the Cougar world, the shop manual is very well done, and easily
available. For some reason, people shy away from reading it. Perhaps they
think it's going to be too technical... but that's not true.
Therefore I recommend as a first step get the TR6 shop manual. It is the
basis that everything else written is derived. Perhaps others can recommend
other specific texts that are well done also.
Good Luck,
Phil
