There is a "natural" location for the adapter if you angle it at around 7
o'clock (looking at it from the side of the car into the engine
compartment). That position allows the filter to be accessible from the
bottom of the car and still lets the oil stay in the filter for quicker
pressure build up at start up. The part about the pressure build up is moot
if your filter has an anti-drain back valve but the filter pointing downward
makes for a less messy oil change.
Make sure the filter you use will still clear the frame when the engine is
running. You don't want to have the filter to get damaged from engine
movement and allow your oil to leak out when driving. That would suck big
time ;-).
