Interestingly enough, this subject also comes up from time to time on
the Volvo lists. I don't know about the 80's Volvos, but for my '67
with a D-type overdrive and for the early fuel-injected cars with
J-type overdrives, SAE 30 motor oil is recommended. For non-overdrive
cars, SAE 80 gear oil is recommended.

Some owners say to use non-detergent SAE 30 (although I don't know
where to get it), some say using 80-90 gear oil is fine (supposedly
Irv Gordon uses this in his 1.8 MILLION mile '66 P1800), and others
say using the gear oil could blow the seals and could cause the OD
cone clutch to slip. I've always used Castrol SAE 30 motor oil and
never had any problems.
